1994 – It was the final evening of the recording session at Revolution Studios and we had completed the radio edit of 'Somebody Like You'. Nigel and I were in the control room and he suggested we use the few hours we had left of the evening to play about with an alternative version of the song. I am always up for these things, so I got a beat going and Nigel began playing along on the piano. It soon became clear that this was going to be great, so we resampled the vocals and triggered them to the new beat. Needless to say, it turned, once again, into an all night session which we just about finished mixing when it was time to leave the studio the following morning. When you come up with an alternative version of a track it is always fresh and exciting in the moment. I remember a special moment when we stopped at a motorway services for a much needed coffee on the way back to Liverpool. We had this new 'Piano Reprise' mix on a cassette in a ghetto blaster someone had brought along and we all ended up in the car park, coffees in hand, dancing around like crazy people while the track was blasting. 'Somebody Like You' was shortly afterwards limited released on the independent Manchester label UFG, featuring all the mixes and other remixes and, after a few months, we forgot about it, as we were writing new tracks. Unexpectedly, this mix went on to appear in the top 10 of Kiss FM's 'all-time top 500 tracks' in 1996! We couldn't believe it! We shortly afterwards signed to VC/Virgin Records in late 1996, with a new radio version released in 1997.
