1994 – I guess it was the culmination of the energy from the previous Elate sessions that we hit upon this one. It started out late one night with just Denise and I in the studio. I was writing the music and she was writing lyrics. She recorded a lot of vocal jams with the lyrics, which I then sampled, reorganised and created the basis for the chorus hook. We then refined the lyrics for the verses and sat back to listen. We both felt very positive about the song and its message, although I felt there was something missing to give the chorus a true lift. Judging by the key the song was in, I thought: 'What if...?' I then asked Denise if she could make me a cup of tea and give me a few moments, as I wanted to experiment with something. I searched through my audio files (floppy disks in them days!) and dug out the Clannad samples I'd used back in 1991. I placed them behind the chorus and they worked a dream! We both loved it, and there and then knew we had a special track. As often happens with pieces of music, it began to take on a life of its own as cassette mixes were being passed around through people we knew. It wasn't long before one of the labels (I can't remember who) gave us some money, no strings attached, to go and remaster the track at the 24-track Revolution Studios, Wolverhampton, UK. David, Denise, Emma, Tony Lawson, a Liverpool rapper, Nigel Ipinson, for extra keyboard work, and myself headed off for a long weekend stay in the studio. We all had a great time, cooked good food, drank a lot, laughed a lot, and this version was the result.
